Covering extremism in Europe with Venture magazine

During spring break 2026, I took a group of honors journalism students at Southern Methodist University to Berlin, Nuremberg and Munich to study how journalists past and present respond to political violence and extremism — and report their own solutions-focused stories about extremism today.

Back in Dallas, the students spent a semester studying how journalists ethically and responsibly cover political extremism, and produced Venture magazine, a revival of a 1940s-era student publication produced by SMU student veterans of WWII.
